ABOUT INTERNATIONAL INTERCLUB GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP

Fred Verdier & Nicky Rombaldi

Meet the team…

The idea of holding an international amateur club tournament in Wicklow was conceived by Fred Verdier and Nicky Rombaldi while they were playing the 18th hole of Powerscourt East course just outside of Dublin.

As the two friends stood on the tee looking down the lush fairway to the picturesque historic home behind the green, and with Wicklow’s famous Sugarloaf Mountain shimmering in the distance, they were overwhelmed by a desire to share the experience.  Having been born in France and Switzerland respectively, and both moved all around Europe and beyond, before settling in Ireland, the two men were aware of how many other golfers from around the continent would enjoy playing each other on these magnificent courses in Wicklow - the garden of Ireland.

By the time Fred and Nicky had sunk their second pints at Powerscourt’s 19th hole, the three-day, three-course International Interclub Championship had become a reality.

A qualified Irish PGA and Pro Member of Golf Club Crans-sur-Sierre in Switzerland, Nicky Rombaldi is also a ski instructor and divides his time between teaching golf in Wicklow in the summer and skiing in his home town of Crans-Montana in the winter. Having taught and played golf all over Europe and Canada, Nicky has experience of numerous courses, but his golfing heart remains in Wicklow: "The scenery and the variety of golf offered here is fantastic," he says. "I have had the opportunity to bring over a few friends from abroad in the past and they’ve always loved it here - and now I’m looking forward to bringing them all over in September!"

Originally from the south of France, Fred Verdier toured much of southern Europe before the lure of a beautiful woman saw him moved to Dublin some time ago where he now lives with his wife and two children. He runs County Wicklow's Tourism Board and is an avid golfer. "Wicklow has been very good to me,” he says. “The people are extremely welcoming to everyone and they all play golf! It’s perfect.”
